Early Challenges and Learnings from a Failed E-Commerce Venture

Starting WeCall was a significant shift in my career trajectory, especially after my experiences in e-commerce. Before WeCall, I founded and led a large online jewelry company, MyJewelryBox.com. We reached a peak of nearly $20 million in revenue by 2012. But despite this impressive revenue, the profit margins were incredibly thin. Everything that could go right did, yet the financial rewards were minimal.

This was a clear indication of the challenges within the business model we were operating under. The cost of customer acquisition was prohibitively high. I felt like I was on the totally wrong side of the digital advertising equation.

As an advertiser, the only certainty was the hefty bill for traffic with no guarantee of conversion into sales. I found myself writing massive checks to Google, Facebook, and various affiliates, recognizing that these platforms had a far more sustainable and profitable model than my own business.

This realization hit me hard. I had created a job for myself where I was essentially working for my suppliers and traffic sources. Despite the size and apparent success of my company, which was among the top 500 e-commerce companies in America, the business was not sustainable. The icing on the cake was when Amazon kicked us off their platform and duplicated our products on their own–from our very own suppliers.

So, in 2014 I decided to close the business. At the time, it felt like a massive failure, a dagger in my heart. But in hindsight, it was a freeing experience, a necessary push towards a new direction. Honestly, my approach was a little naïve; I believed that if I built a great product, success would naturally follow.

This experience taught me the importance of having a solid plan, strategy, and sufficient capital. It underscored the crucial role of advertising and getting your name out there. And it taught me lessons in advertising, customer acquisition, and the realities of running a digital business. These lessons became the stepping stones to my journey with WeCall, shaping my approach and strategies in this new venture.

Unfortunately, hindsight doesn’t happen quickly. For quite a while I spiraled into depression, and personal setbacks followed, including my wife leaving. I tried working as a consultant and even moved to New York City to work for a large jewelry company. However, it quickly became clear that I wasn't cut out for traditional employment. My independent mindset and entrepreneurial spirit made it difficult for me to thrive in such environments. I realized that I'm all about results and performance, values that are central to the industry I'm in now.

Transitioning to Pay Per Call and Finding Purpose in Helping Others

Performance marketing appeals to me because of its clear, results-driven nature. It's about delivering specific, measurable outcomes, a stark contrast to the more ambiguous aspects of digital advertising like branding and clicks, which I struggled with in my previous venture.

In the world of pay per call, clients provide distinct key performance indicators (KPIs), setting a clear target for acquisition costs. This model is refreshingly transparent and accountable. For example, we specialize in the insurance sector. Our clients know the lifetime value of a consumer and what they're willing to pay to acquire a new customer. Our job is to meet those targets, and when we do, the rewards are significant, both for us and for our clients.

What truly sets this business apart, and what I find most fulfilling, is the impact we have on real people's lives. We work predominantly with health insurance for underserved and underprivileged communities, often dealing with government-subsidized programs. My work feels incredibly meaningful compared to the jewelry industry.

Hearing the calls and stories of individuals who had no idea these health insurance programs were available to them, and knowing we played a role in connecting them to essential services, is profoundly rewarding. It's more than just a business; it's an opportunity to make a tangible difference in people's lives.

This sense of purpose and the ability to contribute positively to the community, combined with the satisfaction of meeting our clients' goals, makes me incredibly proud of the work we do at WeCall. It's a fulfilling blend of achieving business objectives and serving a greater good, a balance I didn't find in the jewelry business.

The Success of WeCall and the Birth of Advantage Health

Our journey with WeCall led to a pleasantly unexpected development, the creation of Advantage Health. When we realized we were not just meeting but significantly exceeding our clients' expectations in generating leads, we thought why don’t we have our own agency and become our own client?

The challenge in the industry seemed to be in lead generation, while enrolling customers in low-cost to no-cost health insurance appeared more straightforward. Considering the significant government subsidies involved in these insurance policies, we saw an opportunity to expand our role in the process.

Thus, Advantage Health was born. As we embarked on this new venture and began hiring staff, we inadvertently created a diverse workforce of predominantly African American women. This diversity wasn't by design, but it became a source of immense pride. Notably, each team member earns a significant income, well above the $100,000 mark. This aspect of Advantage Health has been incredibly fulfilling for me. The feedback from our staff about how their new financial stability has positively impacted their lives is deeply moving. I love hearing stories of our employees being able to celebrate holidays with lavish gifts, take amazing vacations, and purchase new vehicles.

Advantage Health is not just a business success; it's a testament to the power of providing opportunities and dignity through employment. It’s about creating a work environment where people can thrive and support their families with pride. And this success story goes beyond the business itself; it's about positively impacting lives at a very personal level.

So, while WeCall continues to thrive in lead generation, Advantage Health stands as a vertical integration of our business model, serving as our own client. From generating the leads to writing our own policies, we have established a seamless process from click to policy issuance. This expansion and success are a testament to the effectiveness of our approach and the real-world impact we are making.

Embracing Performance Marketing with Ringba

My partnership with Ringba marked a significant turning point in my professional life. I had no inclination to explore other options for call routing platforms because Ringba offered everything I needed: reasonable rates, exceptional service, and reliability. Their platform wasn't just a tool for business; it played a pivotal role in changing the trajectory of my life.

The concept of performance marketing resonated with me right away. After years of struggling with the ambiguity and unpredictability of clicks, likes, and brand awareness, performance marketing's clear, value-driven approach was a breath of fresh air. It's about creating tangible value, with a straightforward and transparent mandate.

Ringba's Pay Per Call Masterclass was a revelation. It laid out a no-nonsense path focused on generating real results, a mission with direct impact on the bottom line. This clarity and directness appealed to me greatly. In performance marketing, success isn't shrouded in vanity metrics; it's measured by the ability to meet specific, profitable goals.

Performance marketing, particularly with Ringba, is like being commandos on a clear mission. The objectives are crystal clear, and while achieving them is challenging, the simplicity and clarity of the goals make the process transparent and rewarding. It's all about hitting the mark that ensures profitability, no fluff, no vanity, just pure business efficiency.

This approach aligns perfectly with my philosophy: a business should be straightforward, profitable, and provide real value. It's not just about achieving our own success; it's about ensuring our clients are profitable and strong. With Ringba, we have a clear path to success, one that is both challenging and immensely satisfying.

From the outset, I had a deep conviction that I would succeed in this new arena. And I was right. We were profitable from day one, which was a stark contrast to e-commerce where we suffered significant losses in the early years.

I started the company in April of 2019 with just $15,000, and by 2023, we achieved a remarkable milestone of $80 million in revenue. This growth is a testament to the effective business model and the robustness of performance marketing. What makes this achievement even more significant is that it was accomplished without external investments or bank loans. Everything was self-funded, proving the sustainability and profitability of the business model.

I deliberately chose pest control as our initial vertical, considering it to be a straightforward and seasonally appropriate market to start with. The simplicity of the vertical allowed me to quickly grasp the nuances of performance marketing. People needing pest control services provided a clear and direct marketing objective, making it an ideal starting point for our journey.

Building a Successful Team

When I started in the pay-per-call industry, I recognized my strengths and played to them. I knew I wasn't a media buyer or an expert in running campaigns, but I had strengths in other crucial areas. I'm good at operating a business, building teams, identifying talent, and strategizing. My people skills have always been one of my assets. I'm charismatic and have a knack for building relationships, which is incredibly important in this industry.

Initially, I started small. I hired just one media buyer from Upwork, and I focused on creating opportunities while they handled the media buying. It was a simple but effective setup. But I quickly realized the need for a more robust team. So I brought on an accountant to manage our back office operations. In a small team like ours, everyone wore multiple hats, contributing wherever needed.

It wasn’t long before we were thinking about entering other verticals. I entered into a joint venture with a friend's brother, who became my business partner. This partnership allowed us to venture into insurance services, a vertical I had previously hesitated to explore because of its higher cost per call compared to home services like pest control.

We knew the stakes were higher, but we were confident in our ability to succeed. And once again, we found success. Our focus was always on quality and effectiveness, and I believe our unique approach set us apart in the industry.

Navigating Increased Competition

When I first entered this space, I was frankly surprised at the level of competition, or the lack thereof. Many players in the industry didn't seem to have the same level of commitment or expertise we brought to the table.

The landscape of the pay-per-call industry has become significantly more competitive in the last five years. Back then, I saw an industry filled with legacy players who weren't fully capitalizing on the opportunities. There was a clear gap in the market for someone who was willing to prioritize value creation for clients rather than just focusing on extracting budgets.

I instructed my team to prioritize creating value for our clients, even if it meant initially operating at a loss. The philosophy was simple: produce the highest quality calls – whether in health insurance, pest control, or debt service – and then find a way to make it profitable. The core of our business model is based on the premise of providing immense value first and foremost.

I’ll admit that in the beginning the quality of our leads wasn't always up to par, and several clients left us. This was a crucial learning moment for me. It taught me the importance of reputation in the industry. Your reputation, whether for creating value or just being a revenue-focused 'pirate', travels fast.

From then on, I shifted our focus entirely to generating high-quality leads and maintaining a strong reputation. My philosophy is to build long-term relationships with clients rather than chase quick profits.

Relationships matter, but they're underpinned by the value you provide. Clients have their own accountability, and their success depends on our performance. I thrive on this competitive aspect, driving value, and winning. It's gratifying to see the success and impact of our approach, and there's no doubt that we're winning in this space.

Client Acquisition and Delivering Exceptional Value

Gaining clients in the early stages of any company is never a straightforward task, but we had strategies to open doors. The best approach, which I learned from Adam's masterclass, was offering prospective clients free calls. This not only demonstrated our confidence in the quality of our leads, but also allowed us to showcase our capabilities with no risk to the client.

The premise is simple: if you believe in the quality of your service, you're willing to put your money where your mouth is. By providing a significant value upfront – for instance, a hundred free calls, which could be a $3,000 to $5,000 value – we set the stage for a transparent test of our services.

If the clients weren't satisfied with our performance, they had no obligation to continue. However, I was confident in our ability to deliver, and more often than not, we succeeded in converting these opportunities into long-term business relationships.

Building a reputation in performance marketing is about consistently delivering high-quality service. We focused on creating the best-in-class calls, especially in insurance services, where I believe we excel way beyond our competitors. Once you establish a standard of excellence and start building a positive reputation, word gets around. "WeCall has great calls," becomes the narrative.

But growth in this industry isn't just about delivering; it's about consistency and reliability. You don't become a big player in performance marketing without being genuinely good at what you do. This industry is transparent, and your performance is always on display. The numbers speak for themselves, and there's nowhere to hide.

We pride ourselves on being genuine in our offerings and transparent in our dealings. Our success isn't based on empty promises or short-term gains; it's rooted in the value we consistently provide to our clients, a principle that seems simple yet is not commonly followed in the industry. We are committed to our clients' success, which in turn drives our growth and solidifies our reputation as a leading company in performance marketing.

Once we got a foot in the door and demonstrated our capabilities, we consistently expanded our business with each client. Our growth trajectory with clients often started from a modest number of daily calls and swiftly escalated based on our performance. For instance, we began with a client at 500 calls a day and eventually reached the point of handling 9,000 calls a day for them, translating to $200,000 worth of business from just one customer. This incredible growth started with just 100 free calls.

Ringba played a crucial role in this process by providing the necessary data to make informed decisions, whether granular or at a higher level. This data was crucial in optimizing our campaigns and strategies, ensuring that we continually met and exceeded our clients' expectations.

Ringba User Stories - Dave Maman GOAT Club Award

Looking to the future, I’m constantly aware of the competitive nature of the industry and the challenges of maintaining our edge as a top player. It's about staying vigilant and motivated, recognizing that others are vying for our position. Our goal is to diversify, exploring new verticals within performance marketing like financial and legal services, and expanding within our existing categories.

My philosophy has always been about gratitude and perspective. Even in the toughest times, like the fallout from my e-commerce venture, I focused on staying positive and grateful for what I had. Practicing gratitude helped me appreciate even the simplest things in life. This mindset, coupled with a relentless drive to create value for clients and a commitment to hard work, has been the foundation of my success.

The journey has been incredible, and I'm amazed at where we've ended up, adhering to the principle of doing the right thing and letting the chips fall where they may.

Advice for Newcomers

For those new to the performance marketing industry or contemplating entering it, my advice is straightforward: this business is as real as it gets, but your success depends on your approach and intentions. If you're looking for a quick buck, you might make some short-term gains. However, if you're aiming for a sustainable career in this industry, the key is to consistently create value for your clients.

Ringba User Stories - Dave Maman Leaning Against a Wall

Success in this business isn't just about generating leads; it's about building a reputation for reliability and quality. There are different tiers within the ecosystem, and where you end up depends largely on your commitment to value creation and ethical practices. Your reputation is paramount, and it's closely tied to the value you provide to your clients.

Creating value for your clients is the foundation upon which your reputation is built. Don't engage in practices that could harm your clients or their customers. Your reputation, once tarnished, is incredibly hard to rebuild in this industry. So start right, focus on value creation, and grow from there. That's the path to long-term success and becoming a respected player in the performance marketing arena.
