Diving into the World of Marketing and Entrepreneurship
I’ve always been captivated by the deep mysteries of the sea. And as a child, I dreamed of becoming a marine biologist. Imagine my surprise to find I’m allergic to fish! That dream didn’t come true, but I soon became oddly fascinated with sales, specifically the Home Shopping Network. There was just something so cool about taking blenders and rotisserie chickens and making them seem like the most exciting things on the planet. I spent so much time watching HSN, I could totally see myself as one of the sales personalities.

As I grew older, it was time to “get serious.” I went to college to become a lawyer, but life has a way of changing your plans. My wife and I were expecting our first child, and I needed to get to work. There was no time for internships and working my way up the legal career ladder. We needed money. I had been waiting tables through high school and college, and continued to do so. But I also took my first entrepreneurial leap and purchased a commercial cleaning franchise. I’d wait tables, then when my shift was over, I’d go clean the offices myself. No one could fault my work ethic, that’s for sure.
This experience was my baptism into the world of marketing. The internet was evolving, and with it, Google emerged as the new king of information. Eager to grow my business, I immersed myself in learning web development and search engine optimization (SEO). It was a huge thrill to watch my business quickly reach the top of Google’s rankings. And back in those days, it didn’t take long at all.
This venture was more than just a job; it was a learning lab where I honed my skills in digital marketing. I quickly realized the potential of leveraging this newfound expertise beyond my own business. So I reached out to fellow franchisees, first in my local area and eventually across the United States. I offered to make the phones ring, and they were always grateful for my help. What started with a single cleaning service blossomed into a network of businesses across various industries, each benefiting from my SEO strategies.
By 2008, the seeds of Lead Smart were sown. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was an early pioneer in digital marketing. Maybe I wasn’t exploring the ocean depths, but every challenge was a new adventure, every client offered new challenges, and every successful campaign was like finding buried treasure. Sometimes the best adventures are those we never planned for.

Redefining Success Through Innovation and Partnership
Initially, Lead Smart catered to local businesses one at a time, leveraging my SEO skills honed from earlier ventures. This approach worked well until around 2012 when a game-changing opportunity presented itself. HomeAdvisor reached out to us and said they were impressed by our online presence. At first, it was just flattering. Then they said they wanted to buy all our leads! That’s when I learned the power of leverage. We shifted our focus from signing one small business at a time to partnering with larger aggregators. This strategy not only streamlined our operations but also expanded our reach and impact.
Very quickly the money started rolling in. I hired some of my high school buddies, and we set up this fun office. We were just an SEO powerhouse cranking out marketing for landscapers and plumbers and dentists. Eventually we owned something like 5,000 websites, each with the same strategy. We built the website and optimized it for a certain city and industry keywords, and they’d show up first on Google. It was like magic!
The early days of SEO were incredibly easy, if you knew what you were doing. The adrenaline rush was real when you could magically flip a few switches and change a business forever. But the digital landscape is always evolving, and the Google algorithm updates, known as Penguin and Panda, dramatically impacted our website rankings. By the end of the update period, 70% of our websites were useless.
The party was over. To save the business, I had to let all my friends and employees go. The only person I could afford to keep was Seth, this great kid I met at a boxing gym. He’s now running the whole company as CEO, and he’s an absolute genius. So it’s not all bad news.

We had to pivot, we just didn’t quite know which way to turn. This setback forced us to rethink our strategy and ultimately led to the birth of our affiliate program. Over the course of a few years, we pivoted from generating all our leads in-house to eventually relying entirely on affiliates. While that looked good on paper, it was a major shift in logistics and management.
That’s when Ringba started knocking on our door. We were building our own platform for affiliate management and figured we were all set in the tech department. But Adam was incredibly persistent and eventually I let them demo their product.
Ringba's platform offered a level of sophistication and ease of use that our homegrown system just couldn't match. Their Ring Tree technology, in particular, revolutionized how we distributed leads among buyers. This real-time auction system allowed us to optimize lead distribution based on a buyer’s willingness to pay, dramatically increasing our revenue per lead.
This partnership with Ringba not only solved our technical challenges but also propelled Lead Smart to new heights. Calls that we used to sell for $20, we can now sell for $80 each. When we started with Ringba, we had around 400 affiliates. Ringba’s incredible technology has allowed us to scale to over 3,500 affiliates today. It was a total game changer for us!

Transforming Challenges into Triumphs with Ringba
The COVID-19 pandemic presented another formidable challenge, especially within our dental niche. Obviously, dentists were not alone in being shut down, but the impact that those unprecedented restrictions had on the entire dental industry was really hard to watch. Most dentists weren’t allowed to open their offices except in emergency situations, and many weren’t even allowed that. So, naturally the last thing they needed was to spend money on marketing.
Futuredontics, the parent company of 1-800-DENTIST, had racked up a significant bill with us. Considering the precarious state of the industry at the time, if we turned off their call flow, they were finished. If they were out of the game, that would have significantly impacted us as well. It was a real mess.
What ended up happening was a meeting with the private equity company that owned Futuredontics. They admitted the company was in real trouble and operating at a huge loss. They asked if I might be able to turn things around. To make a long story short, I ended up clearing their debt in return for equity in the company. And I took the CEO job so I could work on fixing the mess we were all in. It was an innovative solution to a lose-lose situation that ended up working out really well for everyone.
Ringba’s technology was the foundation for everything I did at Futuredontics. We took a 150 person enterprise that was running through call centers and streamlined everything down to 20 people and Ringba. I know that sounds terrible, and I hated getting rid of people. But the reality of the situation was that either we cut some jobs and streamlined operations, or everyone would be out on the street. At the end of the day, we went from losing millions a year to netting millions, and I made a successful exit.
I have to say, Adam really stepped up to the plate during this time. I spoke to him and told him everything we needed done to shift the company. We were teetering on the brink of bankruptcy and needed to close the call center by a certain date. So I said we needed it done in 25 days.
I remember there was a long silence, and then just We’ll get it done. I cannot express how grateful I am that he and the whole Ringba team worked so hard to help us get back on our feet and succeed. It’s a true testament to Adam’s amazing leadership and commitment to customers.

Navigating the Highs and Lows
I find myself at a crossroads now, figuring out my future and the next steps for Lead Smart. Under my CEO Seth’s leadership, the company has more than doubled. And his success has allowed me the luxury of stepping back and evaluating what I really want to do next.
Right after exiting Futuredontics, I thought my path should be rescuing other companies in financial trouble. After all, I did it once, so of course I could do it again. It seemed like a wash-rinse-repeat situation. But I was in far too much of a hurry to make an acquisition and ended up losing a significant amount of money. Even my attorney tried to tell me to slow down, but I was full of excitement and adrenaline from my recent success and just wanted to keep riding the wave.
I can’t express how important it is to slow down and step back to get the big picture view. Sometimes entrepreneurs need to move fast and adjust on the fly. But every now and then, we need to stop and get some perspective and trusted counsel.
This incident led me to really think about what drives me. I love the thrill of the chase, the adrenaline of the deal, and that’s been a constant companion throughout my career. Yet, as I face the prospect of starting anew, I'm acutely aware of the need to balance this drive for growth with the lessons learned from past mistakes. The allure of the next big thing must be balanced with a commitment to thorough vetting and a slower, more deliberate decision-making process.

Mentoring and Legacy: Shaping Lives Beyond Business
At the heart of my journey is a fundamental mission: the pursuit of time freedom. Owning my schedule, coaching my son's basketball team, and enjoying the life that my hard work has built means everything to me. Money is necessary to attain time freedom. But the ultimate goal isn’t accumulating wealth, it’s the ability to live life on my terms. Ultimately, I think that’s why all entrepreneurs do what they do.
As I contemplate the next chapter, the question isn't just what I want to do but how I want to live. The path forward isn't clear, but the criteria are: any new venture must align with my values, offer the potential for growth without sacrificing the time freedom I cherish, and draw on the lessons of resilience and adaptability that have been the hallmark of my career.
I've discovered a profound sense of purpose in mentoring others through the ups and downs of business. It's not just about teaching them to sidestep the conventional nine-to-five grind or to challenge the status quo; it's about instilling a belief that there's a different path available to those brave enough to take it.
I’ve found a vibrant community of young athletes to coach. The world is too quick to criticize everything we do these days. So I try to be a source of unwavering support and encouragement, counterbalancing the negativity they might face elsewhere. My goal is to uplift, show them their true potential, and to encourage them to pursue excellence with tenacity.
For entrepreneurs and those yearning to carve their own paths, my advice is to liberate yourself from preconceived notions of success. The conventional framework of employment, the safety net of a regular paycheck, can be a golden cage if it stifles your spirit. My own transition from waiting tables to launching Lead Smart wasn’t exactly a picnic. Yet, it was the leap into the unknown, the willingness to embrace the risk, that paved the way for my achievements.
Find the courage to step beyond comfort, work tirelessly towards a vision only you can see clearly, even if it means pursuing it in the quiet hours of the night.

The Future of Pay Per Call is Bright and Full of Opportunity
Looking ahead, the pay per call industry stands on the brink of transformation. Regulatory changes and technological advancements promise to reshape how we connect businesses with consumers. Yet, within these changes lies great opportunity, for innovation, for differentiation, and for new companies to make their mark. Whether through refining SEO strategies, harnessing the power of social media, or pioneering new methods of lead generation, there's ample space for growth and impact.
In this journey through the unknown, it's the human connections, the moments of genuine support and guidance, that forge the deepest, most enduring bonds. And I just want to reemphasize how much Ringba has done that for me.

It's not just about the technological leap we made by switching to Ringba; it's the unwavering support, the quick ticket resolutions, and the developmental assistance that have been absolutely unparalleled. Unlike other “less expensive” platforms, Ringba has consistently gone above and beyond without nickel-and-diming us for every little feature or improvement. They've enabled us to enhance our services significantly, directly impacting our profitability in the most positive way.
If there's one thing I could impart to fellow entrepreneurs and those navigating the complex landscape of the pay per call industry, it's the importance of being open to change and embracing opportunities to innovate. The right partnerships can elevate your business in ways you might not anticipate, leading to growth and efficiencies that far exceed expectations. Ringba exemplifies this principle through their exceptional service and commitment to their clients' success. As we look forward, I'm excited about the future possibilities and continuing to break new ground, supported by the remarkable capabilities and collaboration that Ringba brings to the table.
